A delicate dance

With every period comes a delicate dance of hormones that play roles beyond that of the reproductive system. Every time we get our period, we generally ovulate 14 days prior. When we ovulate (release an egg) this egg produces a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone is a key factor in making our skin glow. If you are not having a regular period, you are not regularly producing progesterone.

The Evil Androgens

Androgens are a group of 'male' sex hormones. Everybody produces them and it is normal to do so, however these hormones are a key culprit in the production of acne. If you have acne, chances are your androgen levels are elevated.

What causes elevated androgens?

  • irregular periods

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • prolonged exposure to stress

  • decreased liver metabolism
